cleaning tips

We aren’t all ‘Hinchers’, so here are some easy, cost-effective ways to clean those hard areas.

Shower Screen

If you don’t have any shop bought cleaning products, an easy way to get a shower screen gleaming clean is lemon juice and salt! All you need is to mix two table spoons of salt with one tablespoon of lemon juice then scrub the frame with this mix with a toothbrush! Once you have finished, wait a few minutes then rinse with warm water. When rinsing use a squeegee so you are not left with any water marks.

The inside of an oven

This can be one of the jobs that no one ever wants to do as it can be so grubby, however it is a must, especially if you are moving out of a property! Remove everything out of the oven first and put the trays to one side in a bucket of hot water to soak for a few hours. Baking soda is always an old school favourite for this job as some cleaners give off strong overpowering smells. You want to create a paste which is made by mixing half a cup of water with half a cup of baking soda. Place this mix of paste over the inside of the oven but not over the heating elements! This then when you’ve finished needs to sit for 12 hours. After a few hours you can scrub the trays with soap and then rinse. After the 12 hours, just use a slightly wet cloth to wipe off the paste. Lastly, spray some white vinegar to the inside (again avoiding heating agents). Again, wipe it all down with a damp cloth.

Bathroom Tiles

Back to the baking soda mix of baking soda and water, however this time add more baking soda compared to water. Place this all over the tiles and scrub it in with an old toothbrush, then using a damp cloth that has been soaked in lemon juice, wipe the tiles down and rinse off with warm water. If your grouting has discoloured and this does not work, you can buy a grouting pen.

Extractor Fans

This job can be easily forgotten about as you can’t always see the build-up of grime within the filters. The job of an extractor fan is to remove the smells that collate when cooking as well as picking up grease, so it is important to clean them out as they can become a fire hazard if not cleaned. Start by filling a large bucket with hot water and add some dishwasher soap and a little bit of baking soda in the water and mix together. Remove the filters and place them in the water and soak for at least 10 minutes. Now you need to scrub the filters with a non-abrasive brush then rinse with hot water and dry with a clean cloth then place back in.
