What should I do regarding bills before I move home?

No matter if you are renting or selling, it is important to be prepared regarding your bills to prevent you from paying someone else's usage. Take note of your gas and electric metres including a photo of these so you have evidence as well as log these with your providers.

Make sure when you ring them to notify them of the move at least 48 hours before you vacate the property.

Pass on your contact information plus your forwarding address and then if any issues arise they can be dealt with. It is always best to notify the agent who is assisting the move too.

When you arrive in your new home, again make sure you take pictures of the metre readings, in case of any confusion.

Make sure to notify your local council regarding your council tax, as well as your broadband provider, bank, DVLA, TV license and Royal Mail.

Most of these will be a straightforward transfer and usually, you can do this via mail or telephone.
